GTA 6 Extended Preview: What We Learned About Rockstar’s Biggest Game Yet
After more than a year and a half without a major official update, Rockstar Games has finally given fans an extensive look at Grand Theft Auto 6. The developer released a 26-minute preview packed with gameplay footage, character moments, action sequences and stunning visuals.
The “extended look” premiered on Netflix several hours before being released on YouTube, giving fans their first substantial opportunity to see the highly anticipated sequel in action.
With no narration or explanatory commentary, the footage focused entirely on the game itself. Viewers were treated to detailed environments, realistic character animations, high-speed car chases, shoot-outs and glimpses of the criminal world that defines the GTA franchise.
The presentation came shortly after a wave of unauthorised gameplay footage appeared online. Rockstar described the leaks as “heartbreaking” after unfinished material was circulated across the internet.
Now that Rockstar has presented its own version of GTA 6 to the public, several important details have emerged—while plenty of questions remain unanswered.
Jason and Lucia Take Centre Stage
One of the biggest focuses of the preview was the relationship between the game's two main characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino.
The pair are at the heart of GTA 6’s crime story, which has frequently been compared to the classic “Bonnie and Clyde” dynamic. Rockstar has indicated that the relationship can develop differently depending on how players approach the story.
According to developers, player decisions can influence the way Jason and Lucia’s relationship unfolds. Players may even have some control over how closely the two characters become connected.
The preview did not demonstrate the relationship system in depth, but it did confirm that players can switch between Jason and Lucia during different moments of the game.
One sequence showed Jason helping Lucia escape from an apartment building by lowering her from a window during a drug-related confrontation.
Character switching was also a major feature of GTA 5, where players controlled Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
Stunning Graphics and Detailed Environments
Perhaps the most obvious takeaway from the preview was just how impressive GTA 6 looks.
Characters feature highly detailed facial expressions, realistic movements and remarkably lifelike appearances. The game world is equally detailed, with Rockstar showcasing apartment interiors, rooftop venues, nightclubs and numerous other locations.
The game is set in Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida. Its most famous location is Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami that previously appeared in the 2002 classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Another detail that caught the attention of fans was the diversity of background characters. GTA 6 appears to feature a much wider variety of body types, appearances and physical characteristics among pedestrians than many previous major games.
IGN journalist Ryan McCaffrey described the game as potentially “the best-looking game” he had ever seen.
The visual quality is likely the result of Rockstar’s lengthy development process and enormous production resources. Reports have suggested that GTA 6 could rank among the most expensive video games ever produced.
There have also been claims that the game world will be substantially larger than GTA 5. YouTuber TGG, who reportedly visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh, said the developer described the map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s.
Rockstar, however, has not officially confirmed that figure.
Familiar GTA Gameplay Is Still at the Core
Despite its technological advances, GTA 6 clearly remains faithful to the formula that made the franchise famous.
The preview featured plenty of action, including armed robberies, police encounters, vehicle pursuits and criminal operations. Rockstar also appears to be retaining the series’ trademark combination of satire, dark humour and exaggerated takes on American culture.
Alongside the main storyline, players can expect a large selection of activities and interactions throughout the open world.
Rockstar also appears to be building on systems introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2, including mechanics that can influence how characters perceive the player.
For longtime GTA fans, these familiar elements are likely to be just as important as the game's impressive technical upgrades.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise has become one of the biggest entertainment properties in the world, with hundreds of millions of copies sold since the original game launched in 1997.
GTA 6 Online Remains a Mystery
One major question remains unanswered: What will happen with GTA 6 Online?
Rockstar has previously confirmed that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player experience. That has led many fans to expect a separate online component at some point, following the enormous success of GTA Online.
The latest preview focused entirely on the game's story and single-player gameplay, so the absence of multiplayer information was not particularly surprising.
Nevertheless, GTA Online could become one of the most important parts of GTA 6’s long-term success.
GTA Online launched shortly after GTA 5 and went on to become one of the world's most popular online games, generating substantial revenue for Rockstar over the years.
GTA 5 itself remains an extraordinary commercial success. Released in 2013, it has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide.
Meanwhile, the first two official GTA 6 trailers have already accumulated hundreds of millions of views on YouTube, demonstrating the extraordinary level of anticipation surrounding the sequel.
A Huge Launch Awaits
GTA 6 is currently scheduled for release on 19 November, and expectations are enormous.
The game is widely expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches ever, with Rockstar facing enormous pressure to meet the expectations created by years of anticipation.
The latest extended preview has given fans a much clearer idea of what the game will offer, but Rockstar is still keeping several major details under wraps.
Beyond the game itself, Rockstar is also facing scrutiny over workplace issues. The company is expected to appear before an employment tribunal in Scotland over allegations that it unlawfully dismissed several former employees who were attempting to organise a union.

Rockstar strongly denies the allegations and maintains that the employees were dismissed because of alleged gross misconduct.
For now, however, the focus remains firmly on GTA 6. After years of waiting, fans finally have a substantial look at Rockstar’s next massive open-world adventure—and there is still plenty more to discover before launch.
